Oh, my aching back!

We’ve all heard it hundreds of times-use your legs, not your back!  We all know that we should use our legs when lifting objects up, especially heavy ones.  But how many people actually do this?  I can tell you just from working in the gym, that not very many people practice this very important piece of advice.  I see so many people picking weights up with straight legs and rounded backs.  It makes my back hurt just watching them!   Next to bad posture,  picking objects up improperly is one of the most common causes of back pain.  So let’s revisit this technique!

When lifting objects from the floor, you can use the squat position or kneeling down on one knee. 

Be sure to keep the object as close to your body as possible.

Before lifting, tighten all your core muscles-abdominals, hips, glutes.

Make sure to keep the natural curve of your back and use your legs while lifting to a standing position. 

Never twist or turn while lifting.
